American Endangered Species
American Endangered Species # 1 represents my great-uncle Vernon. A Korean War veteran, he was living in a nursing home when the levees broke in the Gentilly area of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. In a panic to evacuate the nursing home, staff left him lying on the floor in a room upstairs. A week went by before the coast guard rescued him by helicopter. He was one of the lucky New Orleanian elders who survived abandonment and starvation in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. – Marcus Brown
